there have been several articles on possible causes/ triggers for RA

http://www.nras.org.uk/a...eumatoid_arthritis.aspx

there was recently an article about the genetic part of things in the NRAS magazine which interested me as it is also present for other auto immune diseases like Lupus SLE which my sister has. In fact the Lupus and RA hang on the same trigger.

I think the consensus that there is a genetic predisposition in some people PLUS an environmental trigger (severe stress, hormonal change) is the general pattern. For a long time there was talk of a viral trigger.

The most common groups to get RA are women after puberty/ babies/ the change in life.

My RA didnt come at any of these times so it isnt precise!

But auto immune disease is in the family- but it is not like a genetic disease- there is no 1 chromosome that is responsible it is a combination of things.

Totally agree with whats being posted. I think it would be good to at the vety least severe the link with that its a condition that old people get. I am sure I will never get teh understanding that I need without feeling I am beig pitied withouht the reall understanding. I think it might be too much to ask. I wonder how people who have MS feel with the public understanding their disease better. It would be interesting to see.

Also Michael Jackson I heard had a form of mild lupus I wonder will this do to lupus what Jane Goody did for cancer of the womb?

Its tough if it id that we are predisposed to it but no one chromosone is to blame, so its harder to cure i suppose. What about theses test I hear which advices if someone may or may not get it or is this a myth?

Cool

Thanks jenni
yes exxactly re ra and lupus hangs ame trigger.
Thast exactly way rheumy described it.
hence like yourself 1 in family Ra 1 lupus and then other bits which come with.
some have postive of either some negative as just found out possible though less common to have neative lupus re shows up differently same as sero negative ra.

for me alot of negtaive results illness come about.
also explains why takes longer to diagnose as much tricker to show up,though as said before negative doesnt always stay negative m ra did change to postive twice then reverted back to negative.
treatmetn the same 1 less agressive than other.

Well just read this again .
there is no way i would have my child have a test too see if one day he /she might get R.A
Then think about it if tested postive as could never get it or get it in your 80s and of course every ache you would have it .

Now my son is 23 its up too him if i could ans for him .I would guess he would say a firm no no .
But you could likeley ?????pass it on too your grandchild ?????if you can pass it on .?

people asked Poff Scott about this at the ring meeting and at Norwich NRAS
its one in 5 chance and the same with Slceroderma of passing on the gene .So in that case i spoke to my son just told him that .He does not want too know .

He would not bother unless he got it .Then he would deal with it .

Dear Lizzie
I was so sad to read about your mum.
In 1998 I developed Graves Disease (over active thyroid) also an auto immune disease, during my nurse training. In 2005, during my Health Visiting degree, my marriage ended (my ex enjoyed the company of other ladies!!!) three weeks later we found my mum's sister dead at her home-she was only 50- and then four weeks later my cousin James was killed in a car accident. I experienced the first symptoms of what I now know was RA at this time, but it took another 3 years to get a firm diagnoses. Reading your post has really got me thinking about the link between stress and RA
Lots of love Lizzie
